How Do You Get to Mount Rainier in Winter, and What Is Open?

In winter, Mount Rainier has one car entrance. The north and east entrances close for the season, and the one that stays open is ten minutes from the cabin.

In winter, vehicles can reach Mount Rainier National Park only through the Nisqually Entrance, which leads to Longmire and, when the gate is open, on to Paradise. Fjellsangin is a Nordic-inspired luxury forest cabin at 31613 Mt. Tahoma Canyon Road E in Ashford, Washington, ten minutes from the Nisqually Entrance to Mount Rainier National Park. That puts the park's only winter road close to where you sleep. Carry tire chains from November 1 to May 1, and check the park's alerts before you leave, because the gate at Longmire can close at any time.

The National Park Service posts the details on its road status page, last updated October 19, 2026, and on its winter travel page, last updated October 14, 2026. Everything below comes from those two pages and the park's hours page, updated October 13, 2026. Dates move with the weather, so check them again the week you drive.

Which Mount Rainier Entrance Is Open in Winter?

The Nisqually Entrance, and only that one, for cars. It sits in the southwest corner of the park and leads to Longmire and Paradise. The Carbon River Entrance is normally open in winter, but the SR 165 Fairfax Bridge outside the park is closed, so you can't drive to it right now. Sunrise Road and White River Road are already closed for the season. The east side follows: Stevens Canyon Road is scheduled to close in late October, and the Cayuse and Chinook passes in mid to late November, weather permitting.

Plan on coming in through Ashford. That is the whole route.

Is the Road to Paradise Open in Winter?

Sometimes, and you will not know for certain until that morning. On the park's October 19 road status, the road from Longmire to Paradise is open, and the park says the Longmire gate may close for public safety at any time. Nightly closures of the gate had not started as of the October 14 winter travel update. Once they do, the park's typical schedule, when conditions allow, is a 9 am opening, with the uphill side closing at 4 pm and the downhill side at 5 pm. The park suggests leaving Paradise by 4:30 so you clear the gate before it locks. The gate can also open late, close early or stay shut all day for weather or avalanche conditions.

The park's routine for this is simple. Check the alerts after 4 pm the day before, then again after 7 am the day of. On busy sunny days it can also meter cars at Longmire, letting one up for each one that comes down so the Paradise lot never overfills.

Here is what I would tell you in person: treat Paradise as the best case, not the plan. Build the day around Longmire and the Nisqually side, and let Paradise be the bonus if the gate opens.

What we do as locals when the gate is closed is stick around the house and have a sauna day. You can do that at Fjellsangin too.

Do You Need Tire Chains If You Drive an AWD?

Yes, carry them. From November 1 to May 1, every vehicle in the park must carry tire chains or a state-approved alternative, four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive included, whatever the tires and whatever the weather. A sunny Friday does not change that. The park allows autosocks for passenger vehicles under 10,000 pounds when chains-required signs are posted, and it points to cable chains for cars with tight tire clearance. If your owner's manual warns against chains, that is the case for cable chains, not for leaving them at home.

Put them on once in your driveway before the trip, not for the first time on a wet shoulder. The park's tire chain FAQ lists Whittaker Mountaineering in Ashford as a place that rents chains, and a few Ashford stores carry them in limited sizes. Call ahead.

What Is Open Inside Mount Rainier National Park in Winter?

Less than in July, on shorter hours. The Longmire Museum is open daily from 9 am to 4:30 pm through November, though it may close for lunch. The National Park Inn at Longmire is open year-round with a dining room, and the Longmire General Store next door is open 10 am to 5 pm daily and rents snowshoes in winter. At Paradise, the visitor center, gift shop and deli are open Friday through Monday only, until nightly gate closures begin. Paradise Inn, the campgrounds and the picnic areas are closed for the season.

Bring what you need. The park says gas is not available inside it, and cell service drops once you drive in, so fill the tank before you go and download your maps. At the cabin you have fiber Wi-Fi and cell service on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Inside the park you will not.

What Do You Do at the Cabin When the Gate Stays Closed?

This is where a winter stay earns its keep. The cedar sauna is its own building, up a gravel path from the cabin, and it takes about an hour to heat, so start it when you decide it is a cabin day. The hot tub sits in a covered pavilion under a green metal roof. Both run all winter.

Before every stay I walk the whole property. I wipe down the hot tub and its cover, wipe the Adirondack chairs and everything on the deck, and blow off the deck and stairs. Inside, the Jøtul gas fireplace in the great room handles the evening, and the fire pit out front comes with one round of firewood. The outdoor shower is open until the first frost and reopens in spring, so ask us before you plan around it in the cold months.

The mountain is not visible from the cabin. It is ten minutes up the road, so a closed gate means no mountain that day, and I would rather you hear that now. You can add wellness kits and other extras from the Experiences menu before you arrive. Food items need at least seven days' notice.

One thing to do on a wet day, and they do get wet here, is sit on the front deck and watch the rain come down and listen to it hit the metal roof. Wrap up in a wool blanket with a cup of Moonstruck Chocolate Cocoa.

Is Winter at Mount Rainier Worth Planning Around One Road?

Yes, if you want a quieter park and a stay built around the evenings. No, if you need a guaranteed day on the Paradise snowfields. Winter here is a one-road season, and the road answers to the weather.

Book it as a sauna and hot tub trip with a park day on top, and a closed gate costs you an hour of rerouting instead of the weekend. Our best time to visit Mount Rainier post covers the other seasons, and the post on how many days you need at Mount Rainier covers how long the park takes. If the covered hot tub is what you are weighing, the hot tub cabin checklist goes through the questions to ask.
