Which Mount Rainier Roads Close This Fall, and What Stays Open?

Stevens Canyon Road in fall at Mount Rainier National Park, scheduled to close for the season October 26

Four roads inside Mount Rainier National Park are scheduled to close for the season between October 19 and October 26, 2026. The road from Ashford up to Paradise isn't one of them, and that largely determines how a late-fall trip should go.

The National Park Service lists the dates on its road status page, last updated September 28, 2026. Paradise Valley Road closes October 19, Ricksecker Point Road closes October 20, and Stevens Canyon Road and the White River Road to White River Campground both close October 26. Every date depends on weather and can move. Fjellsangin is a Nordic-inspired luxury forest cabin at 31613 Mt. Tahoma Canyon Road E in Ashford, Washington, ten minutes from the Nisqually Entrance to Mount Rainier National Park, and the route our guests use most, from the Nisqually Entrance through Longmire to Paradise, has no scheduled closure.

Which Mount Rainier roads close in October 2026?

Paradise Valley Road goes first, on Monday, October 19. It's the one-way scenic route that leaves Paradise and drops down to Stevens Canyon Road. Once it closes, you leave Paradise the way you drove in.

Ricksecker Point Road closes the next day, Tuesday, October 20. It's a short loop off the road up to Paradise, easy to skip in summer and easy to miss once it's gated.

Stevens Canyon Road is the big one. It closes Monday, October 26, and with it goes the drive across the south side of the park past Reflection Lakes to SR 123. Until it reopens next year, the east side of the park is a long way around from Ashford.

The White River Road to White River Campground, on the northeast side, closes the same day. Sunrise Road above it is already closed to vehicles until further notice because of the Grand Park 2 and Wonderland Complex fires. The park has it open to walkers and cyclists only.

When is the last weekend to drive Stevens Canyon Road?

October 24 and 25. Every closure on this year's list lands on a Monday or a Tuesday, so the weekend before each one is your last full chance. For Paradise Valley Road and Ricksecker Point, that's October 17 and 18.

Treat those as the best case. An early storm can close a road before its scheduled date, and the park doesn't hold a date open for anyone. If Reflection Lakes is the reason you're coming, come the 17th, not the 24th.

What's still open on the Nisqually side after the closures?

The road from the Nisqually Entrance to Longmire stays open, and so does the road from Longmire up to Paradise, with one caveat the park spells out: it can close at any time for weather or road conditions. In winter, the park's Alerts page posts the daily status of the Longmire gate. Check it the morning you drive up, not the night before.

That still gives you the whole drive in our guide to the Nisqually Entrance scenic drive, Christine Falls and Longmire included, with Paradise at the top. For more on why this side of the park suits late fall, read why fall is the best time to visit Rainier's Nisqually side.

The thing about driving in the park in the fall is that you almost have the park to yourself. There are fewer cars on the roads, and you really feel like it’s your own personal park. At least, that’s how I feel.

Do you need tire chains at Mount Rainier in November?

Yes. From November 1 through May 1, every vehicle in the park has to carry tire chains, four-wheel drive included, whatever tires you have and whatever the sky looks like that morning. A trip planned for the first week of November falls under the rule. The park's tire chain FAQ is worth reading before you pack the car.

Is a late-fall weekend at Mount Rainier still worth it?

Yes, if your plans run through the Nisqually Entrance. Here's where we'd draw the line. If you've never seen Reflection Lakes, book a stay that ends before October 26. If Sunrise is the whole point, wait for next summer, because you can't drive up to it this year either way. Otherwise the closures barely touch a weekend based in Ashford.

We live next door to the cabin, on the same road out to the Nisqually Entrance, so these dates shape our own fall weekends too. Back at Fjellsangin, the cedar-lined sauna takes about an hour to heat, so start it the minute you're back from Paradise. The hot tub sits under a covered pavilion on cedar log posts, which matters in a wet month.

If the gate to Paradise is closed, stop for a bite to eat at Longmire. It’s actually one of our go-tos. If you don’t want to eat, you can sit on the porch and look at the mountain if it’s out. And we always love to stop in at the store to see what's new. Even as locals, we still pick up a few things.

Fjellsangin is in Ashford, ten minutes from the Nisqually Entrance, with a private cedar-lined sauna and a covered hot tub for the evenings after Paradise. Check availability and book your stay at fjellsangin.com/book-your-stay, then check the NPS road status page the morning you head up.
