What to Pack


The weather near Mt. Rainier shifts quickly — often with misty mornings and cool evenings even in summer.

We suggest bringing:
layers for warmth and rain protection;
sturdy shoes or hiking boots for trails;
slippers or warm socks for inside the cabin;
a swimsuit and sandals for the sauna, hot tub, and outdoor shower;
and optionally, a reusable water bottle and small backpack for day hikes in Mt. Rainier National Park.

Fjellsangin is located in Ashford, Washington, just five minutes from the Nisqually Entrance to Mount Rainier National Park.

Whether you’re driving from Seattle, Portland, or beyond, the journey is part of the experience — winding through evergreens, rivers, and quiet mountain roads that set the rhythm for what’s ahead.

Drive times: approximately two hours from Seattle, two and a half hours from Portland, and just over an hour from Olympia. You’ll pass through small towns with cafés and farm stands worth a stop — a reminder to slow your pace as the mountain draws closer.

For guests driving electric vehicles, a Level 2 EV charger is available on-site so you can arrive — and depart — fully charged.

Life at the base of Mount Rainier moves with the rhythm of nature — mist, snowfall, rain, and sun each shaping the day. The cabin is built for comfort in every season, but mountain life can bring a few surprises.

Weather: Conditions near Mt. Rainier shift quickly. Even in summer, mornings are cool and evenings crisp. Pack layers and check forecasts before you travel.

Power: On rare occasions, storms may cause brief outages. Fjellsangin is equipped with a backup generator, flashlights, and lanterns to ensure your comfort until full power is restored.

Roads: In winter, 4WD or AWD is recommended for the drive to Ashford. Chains may be required for park access beyond the Nisqually Entrance. We’ll notify you if the weather is expected to affect travel.

WiFi: Reliable high-speed internet is provided throughout the cabin. Cell service may fade in the forest — a gentle cue to slow down.

Septic: Fjellsangin runs on a private septic system. Please flush only toilet paper and avoid pouring chemicals down drains to help protect the mountain environment.

The seasonal outdoor shower, open from late spring through early fall, provides a refreshing cold contrast beneath the forest canopy. Please turn off the valve after use to prevent freezing.

Please shower before use, avoid oils or glassware near the tub, and replace the cover after each session to preserve warmth and water clarity. A Bluetooth speaker is provided for gentle music or ambient sound.

    Early check-in or late check-out may be available by request. You can add this option during booking or through your pre-arrival email.

  • No, Fjellsangin is a pet-free cabin. We maintain a pet-free environment to preserve the cabin’s serene atmosphere and accommodate guests with allergies. This applies to all animals, including emotional support animals, with the exception of ADA-recognized service dogs.

  • Cancellations made more than 30 days before check-in receive a full refund.

    Cancellations within 30 days of arrival are non-refundable. We recommend travel insurance for added peace of mind, especially during the winter months when mountain weather can affect travel plans.

  • Ashford is in a mountain climate. Roads are plowed regularly, but guests should be prepared for winter conditions between November and March. We recommend AWD or 4WD vehicles and keeping chains in your car. Refunds are not issued for weather-related travel delays or road closures beyond our control.

  • Yes, families are welcome at Fjellsangin. The cabin comfortably accommodates children of all ages. Please note that the cedar sauna, hot tub, and firepit require adult supervision for safety. The cabin does not provide baby gear such as cribs, highchairs, or safety gates, so guests with young children may wish to bring their own.
